Paint your own, personalized Daruma doll
Renowned local artist Nakata Sumikazu creates the traditional and modern Daruma dolls sold at Daimonya Co., Ltd. The store is the largest of its type in the prefecture and has been making dolls for Buddhist temples since the Meiji era (1868–1912).
Personalize your Daruma doll by having your name written on it or by painting your own. The dolls' eyebrows represent a crane, and the mustache represents a turtle, both of which are symbols of good luck in Japan.
Daruma dolls are good luck charms that are widely believed to have originated in Takasaki. Most daruma dolls in Japan are still made by master craftspeople in the city.
