Unusual rock formations along the Shima River

The Shima Potholes are eight smooth holes that have formed in the riverbed of the Shima River.

The potholes have been created by thousands of years of erosion. The river's ebb and flow gradually circled stones along the riverbed and carved out these dips in the rock. The largest is now 2.9 meters wide and 1.5 meters deep.

Shima River is a beautiful place to hike. Just a kilometer upstream is Momotaro Falls, and Shima Onsen is another 2 kilometers upstream.
