Take a ropeway to the Kanto region's tallest peak

Mt. Nikko-Shirane (2,578 m) straddles the border of Katashina in Gunma and Nikko in Tochigi. It is the tallest mountain in the Kanto region, with Lake Sugenuma and Lake Marunuma on the Gunma side and Lake Goshikinuma on the Tochigi side.

In June and July, hikers are treated to blooming alpine flowers. The trails are sometimes still snowy at this time of year, so plan accordingly before you begin your hike.

Another way to reach the peak is to take the Nikko-Shirane Ropeway from 1,400 meters to 2,000 meters. Take the ropeway from late September to mid-October for expansive views of the foliage as it gradually changes color.
