A modern, stylized retreat in Kusatsu
Yubatake Sensui is a modern accommodation in one of Gunma’s top onsen destinations that blends contemporary aesthetics with traditional Japanese motifs. It is located a short walk from the iconic Yubatake, the geothermal spring at the very center of Kusatsu, which disgorges around 4,000 liters of mineral-rich water per minute. The hotel also stands along the street leading to Sainokawara Park, placing it within easy reach of additional baths, shops, and restaurants.
These same waters feed the en suite ceramic baths in each of the rooms at Yubatake Sensui, where accommodation types range from standard rooms to deluxe suites, each equipped with a small kitchen for preparing simple meals. Many rooms also include a private open-air bath. Those traveling with families or large groups of friends may be interested in booking one of Yubatake Sensui’s three two-story villas. Like the rest of the hotel, each villa is a lesson in mixing modern design with traditional Japanese architecture, the exposed wooden beams and metal fittings harmonizing seamlessly with modern appliances and furniture, producing an interior with a warm yet chic atmosphere.
Dinner is not included with accommodation. A complimentary light breakfast is served at the restaurant on the first floor. In the evening, guests may dine at the hotel’s restaurant, which specializes in sukiyaki, a hot pot dish consisting of thinly sliced meat, tofu, and vegetables cooked in a sweet and savory broth. The ingredients used in every menu item are all sourced within Gunma. Or they can explore the many dining options along the nearby Sainokawara-dori, a street lined with shops and restaurants.
Note that Yubatake Sensui doesn’t have communal baths, so day-use passes or plans are not available. Because every room is equipped with a private bath, guests with tattoos are welcome to stay and enjoy the hot spring worry-free.
