A loud and colorful New Year festival
On January 14 every year, the shopping district around Nakanojo Station transforms into the bright and bustling Torioi Festival.
The festival is the biggest in the area, and one of the loudest, too. It started around 400 years ago to promote a rich harvest by driving away birds and animals that could destroy crops.
Its loud noises and bright colors remain a prominent feature of the festival, with floats, taiko drums, market stalls, and people joining in the celebration.
