An international arts festival in a quiet Gunma town

Artists and art enthusiasts descend on the small town of Nakanojo for the Nakanojo Biennale, an international art festival held for a month every other year. This small onsen town surrounded by mountains is deliberately juxtaposed with the contemporary art on display.

The festival provides a cultural exchange. It is an opportunity for artists to create beyond the constraints of galleries and curators. It aims to inspire a new audience with artwork they may never see otherwise.

You can expect to see sculptures, installations, paintings, and performances displayed everywhere, from schools and swimming pools to abandoned shops and in the streets.

Artists from Japan and overseas stay and work in this unique mountain village community and present their creations during the Nakanojo Biennale.
