Explore the natural beauty along the Shima River

The Shima River, known for its transparency, runs through the center of the Shima area and is the focus of most of the hiking trails. Explore Lake Okushima, a cobalt-blue lake surrounded by mountains and forests. A path leads from the edge of the lake into the mountains.

Farther south along the river are the Shima Potholes, a scenic 15-minute roadside walk from the town. The potholes are eight smooth holes formed over thousands of years in the riverbed. You can also find waterfalls, such as Momotaro Falls, along this stretch of the Shima River.

Other nearby waterfalls include Maya no Taki, which you can hike to from a wooded mountain trail and Koizumi no Taki, a 15-minute walk from the road beside the Shima Grand Hotel.
