Hand-crafted udon and comforting local flavors
Ankodo is a rustic Japanese-style restaurant that serves quintessential Gunma dishes. The restaurant is best-known for its fresh udon noodles, made with carefully selected wheat flour and mineral mountain water.
On the menu are various udon dishes, vegetable tempura—the shiitake mushroom tempura is particularly popular—and yakimanju, unfilled buns that are skewered, covered in a sweet miso sauce, and roasted over charcoal. Lunch sets often come with an assortment of udon, tempura, and Japanese pickles. The second floor of the restaurant is dog-friendly, so travelers can comfortably enjoy a meal with their four-legged companions. Certain conditions apply, including the size of pets and available seating, so visitors are advised to check the restaurant’s website and call in advance.
Connected to the restaurant is a shop where diners can buy local produce and souvenirs. Packaged udon noodles, yakimanju, local sake, and other Gunma delicacies are available for purchase.
